Tanmaya Bingham in from the USA but also spent time living in Australia and exhibiting in Sydney.  The portrayals of my subjects are a direct reflection of my fascination with the human condition. People and animals are often the focal point of my work and act as a beacon of familiarity for the viewer. They are frequently placed within a context that is otherworldly with an oblique or unusual frame of reference. It is through these exaggerated renditions of life that I have cultivated my own style.

Even though my artworks appear to have a photographic quality, they are hand drawn and painted. The realistic elements are primarily rendered in colored pencil while the abstracted elements are typically painted with acrylic. My refined mastery of drawing is a skill I have cultivated since childhood and today view it as core to my art practice.

Dylan Bowen is a well known ceramicist from the UK.  He comes form a family of potters as his father and wife also work in ceramics.  

Dylan’s wheel thrown and hand-built slip earthenware are a balance between traditional ceramics and works of painterly art. His movements behind the application of slip (a liquid form of clay used to decorate his objects) are inspired by music and abstract expressionism, channelled through various actions of pouring, trailing and brushing. The making and decorating process blend together so that the spontaneity and energy invested into the creative process are embodied in the finished piece.

We came across his works at the Contemporary Ceramic Centre in London on a visit and since our initial purchase we have added any more works to the ELLIOTT EYES COLLECTION over the years.

Born in 1950 (New Zealand), Gavin Chilcott graduated with a Diploma of FineArts from Elam School of Fine Arts, Auckland, in 1970. Gavin lives and works in Wellington, NZ.  Although primarily a painter, Chilcott has worked in other media such as ceramics, rugs, furniture, as well as lithography and sculpture, and has blurred the boundaries between fine and applied art.  

Chilcott's work makes use of some of the more recognisable Surrealist conventions - symbolic objects, warped orstrained perspective, a sense of incongruity - married to the use of audacious colour and often chunky forms and zany compositions.

Madeleine Child is a New Zealand ceramicist and teacher. She was born in Sydney in 1959 and moved to New Zealand in 1968.  She lives and works in Dunedin, NZ.

Child has pursued the study of ceramic and glass in New York, Lisbon, and London where she received a BA(Hons) Camberwell School of Art ,Masters from the Royal College of Art and Advanced studies Central St Martins College of Art.

Madeleine's extensive training and travel can be seen technically and conceptually in her work whether reflecting the distinctive colour and vibrancy of Mexican pottery or the playfulness in faux chocolate Easter bunnies. Her work evokes a sense of sentimentality that is, at times, countered with darker intonations as in Sweet As, a collection of intensely colourful popcorn. Buying her children coloured popcorn she became "fascinated by its fleshy gorgeousness, organic fecundity and forbidden fruitiness" creating hundreds of giant ceramic popcorn pieces sparking with colour to comment on food politics and additives.

Peter Churcher is an Australian artist now living and working in Barcelona, Spain.  A figurative painter with exceptional technique he takes the everyday person rather than models and paints what he sees.  This can be set poses or within the city or landscape itself.

Jim Cooper is a senior ceramicist based in Dunedin, New Zealand.  His ceramics may take the shape of a figure, animal or plant they are are all colourfully glazed and generally form part of unique installations of works.

Continually pushing the boundaries of ceramics and taking clay it its absolute limits, Coopern has developed a fresh and dynamic approach to the medium. With their playful and whimsical appearance, Cooper’s installations disguise the challenges and technical finesse required for their construction.

Cooper won first place in the Norsewear Art Awards in 2006.  In 2009 Jim Cooper was the joint winner of the prestigious Portage Ceramic Award in Auckland, New Zealand.

Bronwynne Cornish is a ceramicist, sculptor and art educator.  A NZ based artist, she is held in all the major institutions and private collections in NZ.  Her career spans over 40 years.  Since beginning to work with clay in 1968, she has developed a practice which is largely sculptural, including many installations and large works. Her work looks at the crossover between animals and people, placing those characteristics in fine balance and emphasising the wildness that we have lost in our lives today. She notes, “I make work that I hope will create a certain atmosphere, ring a long-lost bell, and help people create their own mythologies”.

Born 1978 in La Louvière (France) Works and lives in Brussels since 1997.  His work is often personal, using objects and memories from childhood. A young and emerging artist he has exhibited in New York, as well as in many European countries.

The sculptor Eric Croes has been working several years on the development of his themes of choice through the medium of ceramics. Motivated by both his personal interests as well as his practice, Croes, like many artists of his generation, utilises new tools and new production methods, transcending longprevailing polarities: craft versus art, tradition versus modernity, art versus design, traditional tools and media versus technology. Robert Fielding is an Aboriginal artist from Mimili community in the APY Lands. His work is a reaction to his heritage and interaction with the white people. His work “in Our Hands” references the Whitlam act of pouring sand into the hands of an aboriginal elder. The work on paper is part of a suite of works to show that even though time has passed has much changed over all this time.

Other works by Robert in the collection link with this work including the video that directly relates to the work on paper as well as the three flour drums that loosely translate to past, present and future which were part of the payment for the workers on the Wave Hill Station which lead to changes in work conditions.

Robert has won the Telstra Prize for works on paper and is collected by many institutions.

Todd Fuller, a young Sydney based artist working across several mediums, including hand drawn animated film, painting, wall drawings, ceramics, bronze sculpture and performance art. 

Todd finds animation to be the ultimate tool for storytelling. His narratives are autobiographical, metaphorical, and highly personal. Widely accessible through themes of love, loss, masculinity and the absurdity of the human condition, the ‘every man’ they depict is applicable to us all.  In March 2017 as part of the Hill End Artist in Residence program Todd created the animated series, Icarus of the Hill. Combining analogue filmmaking with drawing and painting Todd’s animations explore the significance of place, narratives of history and his experiences.

A young and talented artist, he has been granted several residencies including to Paris and Rome and several throughout Australia.

For Glassborow, bronze is the ultimate material. Its life surpasses any other medium; a creative thought today, cast into bronze, could still be here a thousand years from now. sculptures possess a power of delusion as they delight in their interpretations of the world around us.

Emphatically playful and frequently deriving their inspiration from phrases of popular culture, one can recognise the influence of Art Deco and Greco/Roman figurative sculpture in Stephen’s work – however, he retains a very contemporary perspective.

James Gleeson (1915 - 2008) was a surrealism painter who was also an educator, administrator and author.  He used many techniques in his works and was known for his male nudes in psychoscapes which often used his partner, Frank O'Keefe as his muse.  The works in the early 1960's were generally small in size with meticulously painted prefect figure.  Since the 1970s Gleeson generally made large scale paintings in keeping with the surrealist genre. The works outwardly resemble rocky seascapes, although in detail the coastline's geological features are found to be made of giant molluscs and threatening crustaceans.  In keeping with the Freudian principles of surrealism these grotesque, nightmarish compositions symbolise the inner workings of the human mind. Called 'Psychoscapes' by the artist, they show liquid, solid and air coming together and directly allude to the interface between the conscious, subconscious and unconscious mind. Gleeson's later works incorporate the human form less and less leaving the landscape to survive.

Right until his death in 2008 he painted or drew every day.

During his life he was the author of many books on artist, art history and has had several books published on his works.  He has also had several major retrospectives highlighting his career and art.

He is well represented in all major institutional collections and private collections in Australia.

Antony Gormley (1950 - ) is a British artist but known internationally for his sculptures, public art and installations.  HIs work involves the human figure (based on Gormley himself) and how it relates to space. This space can take on many form e.g. desert, the sea, urban environments, tight enclosed spaces or open air pubic spaces.

He is widely know for his work 'Angel of the North' (Gateshead, England), of which a scale maquette of this work is held in the National Gallery of Australia in their sculpture garden.   He also has 'Another Place' (Crosby Beach, England) where his figures appear depending on the tide.  Here in Australia he created the work 'Inside Australia' (Lake Ballard, WA).  His work 'Event Horizon' has been on show at many major international cities e.g. New York, Hong Kong where his works appear both at street level and on the top of buildings.

Wes Hempel has been committed to reinvisioning the depiction of masculinity in contemporary art.  By setting psychologically acute portraits of modern-day males against backdrops appropriated from such disparate sources as Neoclassical history painting and Dutch Golden Age landscapes, the artist's works forge provocative dialogues between the exigencies of the present and its endowments from the past.

Hempel's paintings explore the divide between the ancient and modern, reason and passion, august ideals and the profoundly individual.  The artist recasts modern male figures in historical and culturally iconographic settings, provoking both a re-thinking of assumed narratives and mythic themes and inviting a similar reconsideration of contemporary life, masculinity and sexual norms.

Cherry Hood lives and works in the Southern Highlands of NSW.  She has become well known for her haunting, large-scale images of young boy’s faces. In the last year she has started to add girls faces to her repertoire, but adolescent boys, with androgenous features, still dominate each exhibition. She is passionate about her subject matter, and feels a strong platonic love for each face.

Cherry paints these images using watercolour on canvas, which is then sealed. The dribbles and runs of the watercolours stain each young face, like permanent tears. In recent years she has added in backgrounds to each image, often butterflies, flowers or plant forms.

Hood was the winner of the 2002 Archibald Prize, the most prestigious painting award in Australia, with her portrait of the young pianist Simon Tedeschi.

Jess Johnson was born in Tauranga, New Zealand in 1979. In 2016 she relocated permanently to New York after twelve years of living and working in Melbourne, Australia. Her drawing and installation practice is influenced by the speculative intersections between language, science fiction, culture and technology. In her drawings she depicts complex worlds that combine densely layered patterns, objects and figures within architectural settings.  Her recent video collaborations with Simon Ward have involved translating her drawings into animated Virtual Reality.

Alex Kosmas is a Sydney base artist working as a sculptor.  He completed a Bachelor of Arts at the Canberra School of Arts. Diana has been exhibiting since the early 1960’s and still creates exciting art to this day. Her art practice takes on many forms including painting, collage to photography.

Within our collection, her photography is prominent. Created in the mid 1980’s she used the then current polaroid camera to create her art. The photos were taken then physically manipulated on the original polaroid. Her technique varied but each work gives a new dimension to her creativity. Using Grant Leigh Mitchell as her muse for these work they are of their time and showcase the art scene at that date.

She is collected across England, New Zealand and Australia.

Euan Macleod is a senior artist based in Sydney, Australia. He works mainly in painting but also occasionally ceramics. Breon Martin, sculptor based in Hobart, Tasmania used individual letters of text to create unique works of art.  Studying furniture design and fine art he found that offcuts became a source of inspiration which lead to further investigation into using other offcuts to recycle into his art works.

"I find inspiration from building sites, depots and industrial estates. These properties are filled with pallets, containers, building materials, and surrounded by wire fencing coated with ‘danger’ and ‘do not enter’ signage. David began sculpting in his teens , mostly figurative work carved in wood. Returning to Auckland in his early twenties he worked in a variety of jobs including boatbuilding and construction and gained skills with glass and carbon fibre, steel fabrication, welding and woodwork.

McCracken is continually developing and adding to his vocabulary of systems and continues to try new techniques such as that employed in ‘drop forged artwork’ – achieved by dropping a wrecking ball from a crane onto a sheet of alluminium  placed atop a sand bed to generate a massive ‘dent’… or hydroforming steel into complex compound forms with hydrostatic pressure, or driving over sheets of steel with a vehicle to create curves.

Richard McWhannell is a painter of figurative, portrait and landscape paintings. While he often does not attribute meaning to his paintings, he has long been concerned with the portrayal of psychological space. In his words, "I provide images for reflection and meditation. Meaning depends on interpretation... for me to predicate meaning could be to lessen the viewer's experience."

The psychology of separation, isolation and introspection may be there, but what is important is the paint, the hand that makes it. Visible brushstrokes slide softly over the canvas in an earthly palette, intoning an enigmatic quality to the subject whether portrait or landscape.

Clement Meadmore (1929 - 2005) was born in Australia but spent most of his life in the USA.  

While a young artist, his work was highly regarded and he was awarded a number of exhibitions, including several one-person shows in Melbourne and Sydney.  Meadmore moved to New York in 1963 at the age of 34 and later became a United States citizen.  Meadmore lived and worked in New York. 

In his sculpture, Meadmore endowed a single form with clarity and rigor, while at the same time he conveyed the complexity, expressiveness and dynamics of classic modernist sculpture which underlay Meadmore's pursuit of a gestural or "drawn" character for his sculpture. Aside from matters of proportion, his work acquired a monumental scale and a mode of address that engaged in rather than detached from the frankly public, occasionally heroic voice it adopted.

In a typical sculpture by Clement Meadmore, a single, rectangular volume repeatedly twists and turns upon itself before lunging into space, as if in a mood of aspiration or exhilaration, or simply to release physical forces held in tension. Meadmore's works have always fused elements of Abstract Expressionism and Minimalism. Since Meadmore's sculptures are often large, this impression of effortless physical grace is simultaneously underscored and called into question through the fluid signature like immediacy of their physicality.

Meadmore was one of the first sculptors to work with COR-TEN steel, which became his preferred medium. He admired the natural, rusted patina of this steel which, in this case, gives the impression of an industrial beam, no longer of any use and left to rot on a vacant block. In the studio of his apartment, he built small maquettes which were no more than 30 cm long. If he saw that the maquettes had potential to be translated on a monumental scale, he would have the works manufactured as large sculptures by a local fabrication plant. His powerful but spare works were often fabricated at Lippincott, Inc., in Connecticut, a plant that was specially developed to strictly produce works of art.

Julian Meagher is a Sydney based artist.  He studied medicine but followed his passion as a full time artist.  

Meagher's oil paintings have a unique watercolour effect. His interest in the concept of both personal and inherited history, including links to our national identity, is evident in much of Meagher's subject matter.

Tom Moore works in blown glass, an ancient technique, but his images, narratives and settings are completely contemporary. His fantastical world embraces gorgeous birds and animals that have already hybridised with modern automobiles and aeroplanes and is inhabited by exquisite creatures that are morphing to inhabit a universe that seems quite as ominous as it is beautiful.

Tom is based in Adelaide, South Australia. He works closely with JamFactory, using their hot glass facilities as well as working from his own studio at home.

Arthur Murch (1902-1989) was Australian born.  He was a prolific twentieth century artist and sculptor. He lived by the sea near Sydney for many years and drew inspiration from the environment for his figurative and landscape works.

He won the Archibald Prize in 1949 and developed several different artistic styles over his career from impressionist to cubist.

Murch was commissioned as an official War Artist for the Second Wold War and has 47 of his works in the War Memorial collection.

Following his death his wife and daughter spent a great deal of time and effort cataloguing his work and life and there is an excellent website on him.

Nell is a Sydney based artist working across a wide variety of media. Her work focuses on such themes as sex, death, rebirth, philosophy, rock ‘n’ roll and includes painting, sculpture, ceramics and performance art.

John Nicholson is a Sydney based artist working with coloured acrylic in a unique and creative manner.  He was exhibited widely since 1997.  In 2007 he was aware a residency in New York.  

"John Nicholson experiments with colour, and his colourful works have been described as a kind of 'architectural, optical art'. Working consistently with various plastics, binding polymers and pigmented Perspex, Nicholson creates sculptures and two-dimensional wall installations in his signature psychedelic palette. Nicholson is interested in the formal properties of light and how light interacts with its environment. Andrew Nicholls in a Perth based artist.  He has exhibited across Australia, Southeast Asia, Italy and the United Kingdom.  While primarily drawing-based, his practice also incorporates ceramics, photography, installation, performance, and filmmaking.  Andrew has also been working as a curator which allows him to show a diverse range of art and artists within a given context.

Sri Lankan-born, Sydney-based artist Ramesh Mario Nithiyendran creates rough-edged, vibrant, new-age idols. He experiments with form and scale in the context of figurative sculpture to explore politics of sex, the monument, gender and religion. Formally trained in painting and drawing his practice has a sculptural emphasis which champions the physicality of art making. While proceeding from a confident atheist perspective, Nithiyendran draws upon his Hindu and Christian heritage as reference points as well as a large range of sources including the internet, pornography, fashion and art history. Self-portraits make frequent appearances and the dual presence of male and female organs suggest gender fluid realms of new possibilities.

Ramesh Nithiyendran

Sidney Nolan was born in Melbourne, Australia on 22nd April 1917.  He is internationally  know for his "Ned Kelly" series of paintings.  In 1956 he moved to Greece where he spent a year painting themes derived from Greek Mythology.  The painting in our collection is from this period of time.

Major retrospective exhibitions of Sidney Nolan’s work have been held in Sydney in 1967, in Melbourne in both 1987 and 1992, at the Whitechapel Art Gallery in London in 1957 and in Dublin at the Royal Dublin Society in 1973. Important exhibitions of his early work have been held at Institute of Contemporary Art in London in 1962 and later in 1994 by the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Sidney’s work is widely represented in the state galleries of Australia, the regional art galleries in the U.K. as well as the Tate Gallery in London, the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Pittsburgh Museum of Art and the Irish Museum of Modern Art.

A young, exciting abstract artist Yioryios completed his study at ANU (Canberra) and then undertook an exchange program in Paris.

Yoiryios explains his art practice as “My works reflects architectural forms which are grounded in the framework of painting but realised in the form of sculpture. Working with aluminium and acrylic paints, I bend, fold, contort and manipulate my material.”

Yioryios work is held in significant collections such as the Justin House Art Museum collection, the ANZ collection, the Pricewaterhouse Cooper collection, the Crown Casino collection and the Australian Embassy in Paris collection.

Richard Parker's work is all about energy. From their form and construction through to the tiniest changes in glaze, line and surface, these pieces communicate from the heart of their maker - energetic, passionate, humorous, and free.

Reko Rennie is a multi media artist based in Melbourne, Australia.  His work is based on his indigenous culture and heritage.  He uses contemporary themes and styles in his work.  He has worked in many places around the world including the USA, Italy, France, China and India.  He creates both domestic size art as well as large scale public art.  He was selected to light the Sydney Opera House for the Vivid Festival 2016.

Anne Ross in a Melbourne, VIC based artist working mainly in bronze sculpture.  Her sculpture comes from her drawings, which are then realised in 3D with sizes ranging from very small domestic scale right thought to large scale public art works.  She has been commissioned to create many public art works in Canberra and surrounding suburbs, various cities in Victoria and several works in Hong Kong.

Humour emanates through her work and children are delighted and engage strongly with them.

Anne's time is mainly taken up these days with commissions but her domestic works are a real treasure.  She is an avid dog lover and 'dogs' feature in many of her works including several works in the ELLIOTT EYES COLLECTION.

Peter Schipperheyn is an excellent sculptor working mainly in marble but also bronze. Predominately a figurative sculptor his works can me of both domestic or monumental in scale.

His work in our collection is a maquette for the larger work which was commissioned by Dame Elizabeth Murdoch for McClelland Sculpture Park in Victoria. Our small work of 90cm height is drafted by the larger work of over 4m.

Alex Seton is a Sydney based artist. His artistic practice incorporates photography, video, sculpture and installation to investigate the complex relationship between form and substance. He is best known for his beguiling marble carving, applying his refined craftsmanship to unexpected forms. Blankets, hoodies, inflatables and national flags are rendered in stone, invoking a somatic paradox. By infusing the rich heritage of Classical statuary with contemporary concerns, Seton gives weight to the issues we face here and now.

Alex has exhibited widely in Australia and Internationally.  His works are collected by major institutions and collections.  He has been awarded many grants and had many solo shows.

Jane Siddall is a New Zealand-based fibre artist who is a prize-winning embroiderer. She also makes three-dimensional textile sculptures and dolls. Jane Siddall’s works often draw their subjects from myths and fairy tales. Forbidden love, beauty, beasts, transformation and impossible tasks play out on the rich, textured surface of finely worked fabrics, intricate drawings and individually crafted artist dolls.

Stephan Siebers in based in Cologne, Germany.  His work is a play on gravity which plays with logic and balance.  The geometric parts seem to tumble, slide or lean yet are firmly fix like a moment in time.  Minimal and abstract, the viewer takes time to understand the balance and precision of his work.

Working in a variety of scale, his cortex steel works are generally reserved for the large works where as either hollow or solid steel are preferred for the smaller works.  Solid steel works can also be extremely heavy yet look quite delicate.

Michael Simms is a Sydney based artist whose work is characterised by dream-like depictions of the human figure. Ranging from traditional portraiture to explorations of identity in the digital age and queer culture, his paintings and drawings combine elements of classicism, romanticism, surrealism and psychology.

Michael completed a degree in psychology in his hometown of Adelaide before winning a scholarship at Sydney's historic Julian Ashton Art School. In 2018, he was awarded the Royal Art Society of NSW Young Artist Prize, the inaugural SBS Portrait Prize, and in 2019 he completed a residency at the New York Academy of Art. Michael has been a finalist in several major art awards including the Doug Moran, Kilgour and Black Swan prizes. He is currently a resident at Project 504 in North Sydney, and is represented by Flinders Lane Gallery in Melbourne.

Kāryn Taylor is an installation artist who lives and works in Auckland, New Zealand. She holds an MFA (First Class) from Elam School of Art, Auckland and a BFA (Hons) from Massey University, Wellington.

Luke Thurgate is an artist living and working on Gadigal Land (Sydney). He teaches drawing and painting at the National Art School, where he graduated in 2021 with a Master of Fine Art.

Luke’s multi-disciplinary studio practice explores the construction and deconstruction of ‘identity’ in relation to sexuality, romance and power. Working across drawing, painting, sculpture and performance, his works appropriates the signifying capacity of the western canon, referencing processes, materials and imagery from Renaissance and Baroque art making.

Luke’s current work uses the monster as a surrogate ’other’ to explore tensions between parody, sincerity, menace, pathos, transgression, and vulnerability. Informed by a range of sources, including popular culture, and Catholic iconography, his practice transcribes the western canon through a lens of queer aesthetics and subjectivity.

Ross Watson is a Melbourne based photorealistic artist.  His work features the male form in various settings or juxtaposed with classic works of art with a contemporary twist.  Many of his models for his work are well known sportsmen or celebrities.

He has exhibited in over 30 solo exhibitions, including London, Berlin, Cologne and Toronto, since 1984 with his works collected widely across the world.

Mark Whalen is an Australian born, Los Angeles based artist. Whalen expresses satirical social narratives in seemingly universal situations.
